The Easiest Beginner Quilt Ever

Today I’m making one of the easiest quilts I’ve sewed since I started quilting.

It’s a beginner scrappy quilt, absolutely gorgeous and incredibly quick to make. 

So, if you’re looking for a quilt that looks expert level that you can sew even if this is your first time quilting, this is for you. 

What is the Easiest Quilt to Make if You’re a Beginner?

There are many quick and easy quilt patterns that are perfect for beginners.

For me, personally, the easiest quilt to make is one made out of pre cuts.

Like a stripey quilt made out of jelly rolls or a stamp quilt made out of charm packs.

The way you cut fabric has a big influence on how your overall quilt will look – if it’s poorly cut, odds are the quilt will look wonky.

If you’re using pre cuts, you’re saving yourself time and effort and guaranteeing that your easy quilt will look perfect.

Easy Quilt Patterns

Let’s talk about easy quilts.

An easy quilt is a quilt you can make without having a lot of knowledge or experience on the subject.

It also helps if it’s quick to make like those easy quilts that can be made in a day.

Quilt patterns for beginners are usually made of simple shapes that are repeated often to make like easier for beginner quilters.

Square quilts are usually a great place to start. 

In fact, the first quilt I’ve ever done was a stamp quilt made out of 4 inch squares.

Yeah, the bigger the pieces, the easier making a quilt will be.

Having said that, an easy quilt doesn’t have to look easy or beginner level.

There are several easy quilt ideas that look absolutely stunning once they’re finished. 

And the fireworks quilt pattern is definitely one of those, made our of easy quilt blocks that look difficult but that are, in fact, quite easy to make. 

Easy Beginner Quilt Idea: The Fireworks Quilt

This firework quilt idea is the quintessential easy quilt pattern.

It is made out of simple blocks that beginners quilters will be able to create without any problem.

The shape of these blocks resemble petals or two way arrows.

In the end, combining these simple quilt blocks with the stunning rainbow colors I’ve picked make the perfect firework pattern, little bursts of colors spread around our quilt.

A quick, easy and stunning quilt pattern that any beginner quilter will love to make.

Easy Fireworks Quilt Supplies

• Colorful fabric
• White Fabric
• Rotary Cutter
• Rotary Blade
• 6” x 6” Quilting Ruler
• Cutting Mat
• Mini Iron
• Ironing Wool Pad
• Basic Sewing supplies: Pins, needles and thread
• ¼ on an inch foot (sewing machine)

Easy Fireworks Quilt Requirements

I chose rainbow colors: purples, dark blues, light blues, greens, yellows, oranges and reds. For this pattern, I’ll need:

• 128x 1.5 inch white squares
• 64x 3 inch squares in all different colors or the rainbow

Step 1: Picking the scraps

This may be tricky when you have a large or unorganized scrap pile, but so worth the trouble to be able to put scraps into good use.

The only rules here are, the colors need to be right and the size needs to fit what we need, that’s it!

Step 2: Cutting the squares

And now we cut 64 squares in all the rainbow colors… plus the pink. 

So that’s 8 3 inch squares per color.

Ideally you’d want all the 8 fabrics to be different but it’s not an absolute must.

Step 3: Cutting the white squares

Our next step is cutting the white squares.

Half the size, so 1.5 inch squares, double the amount.

So, for each color square we need 2 white squares, so 128 total.

Step 4: Joining the squares

In true quilt pattern for beginners fashion, this next step couldn’t be easier.

We just add two white squares to each color square, one in each opposite corner.

Step 5: Making a diagonal line

Next step is drawing a diagonal line through both.

Now, I’m drawing these lines across only because it’s practical.

In fact, each line will be lined up with the corners of the bigger square.

Step 6: Sewing the squares

Next step is sewing the white squares onto the bigger color square.

I advise you pin the white squares because we need to make sure they are positioned exactly on top of the corners for the larger square.

Step 7: Folding the egdes

And if we did our job correctly, by this time, you should be able to fold the white squares in half, by the seam, and essentially get a perfect square.

If the square isn’t perfect because the corners aren’t lined up, you probably need to remake them.

Step 8: Cutting off the excess

All there’s left to do is cut off the excess fabric from both squares and that’s it!

Step 9: Repeating the steps

And now it’s time to repeat steps 4 to 8 63 more times!

Step 10: Making the puzzle

Let’s make our puzzle!

For this pattern I decided to create little firework crosses in all the colors and essentially mirror them in the middle.

So each opposite corner starts with the purple, then the dark blue and so on, meeting in the middle with the yellow and the pink.

Step 11: Sewing the squares

Time to sew all our squares together.

First in pairs, then in rows and finally in columns until our fireworks quilt top is nice and ready.

Step 12: Our fireworks quilt pattern is done!

And after a little bit of pressing, this is what we get.

A lovely, colorful burst of color like a fireworks show.

A true beginner quilt that’s one of the easiest quilts I’ve ever made!
